Janel Maher - Biography

Janel Maher

Janel Maher's sculptures are known for capturing the heart, soul and very essence of one of our greatest treasures - the horse. Maher's sculptures can be found among collections throughout the United States, Europe and South America with two perpetual trophies in England and South Africa.

Maher's passion for capturing an individual horse's character and conformation is evident in her commissioned pieces that range from bronzes of National Champions to the monument at Thoroughbred Motor Cars. Martin Bennett, President of Thoroughbred Motor Cars, says "Janel managed to absorb the philosophy which drives our company and to express it through her marvelous interpretation of the horse on our logo".

The quality of her bronzes shows she is equally adept at doing commissions as she is creating works from her own ideas. Dr. Burt Melton, owner of the striking National Champion Arabian stallion "Nabiel", who commissioned Maher to sculpt his horse in bronze, had this to say about her work: "Though many have tried to capture the look and spirit of Nabiel, Janel Maher has succeeded! She imbued the essence of his soul, likeness, and legacy in this bronze. Her creation has immortalized Nabiel".

Growing up in Colorado, Janel Maher dreamed of horses in her youth. "My early drawing and painting set the stage for my wish to become an artist,"recalls Maher," and I was always fascinated with animals, horses in particular." Many of Maher's sculptures are inspired by her own horses, poetry or songs brought to life as seen in "Vaqueros Amigo" or in the nobility of her warrior steed "Dragon Slayer".

In describing Maher's "Ponies Before the Storm," one collector says, "Horses run through Janel Maher's hands…then she stops them in bronze so we can touch them."
